Do you know? A Colour Fit for a Queen: The Story of Royal Blue

The origins of Royal Blue trace back to 18th-century England, during the reign of King George III. As the story goes, a guild of clothiers in Wells, Somerset, was commissioned to create a gown for Queen Charlotte. The chosen design featured a newly developed, vivid blue fabric — rich, deep, and striking in its clarity. The Queen was so taken with the colour that it soon gained royal favour, and the shade became known as Royal Blue. Originally, the term referred to a deep, bright blue. In those early days, achieving such a saturated dye was a technical feat, reserved for those who could afford the finest pigments and cloth — hence its strong association with nobility and ceremonial dress. Over time, Royal Blue found its way beyond garments and uniforms, appearing in fine china, interior trims, royal regalia, and eventually design and décor. Even today, it carries a sense of formality, restraint, and quiet grandeur, and is deeply rooted in heritage.
