The quiet, dependable heart of a beautiful door — the part you never see but feel with every turn.

This is the tubular mortice latch made to partner turning glass and ceramic knobs on internal doors. The spring is smooth and unhurried, so the latch catches and releases with a soft, weighted click rather than a rattle — the difference between a door that merely closes and one that feels properly made.

Sink it into the edge of the door, pair it with a set of turning knobs, and it disappears into the woodwork. It is the unglamorous but essential companion to a good knob, and it is worth getting right.

• Curved strike plate for the door frame
• Dust socket — the white back box that lines the hole in the frame
• 8mm spindle, square section, to carry the knobs
• Four fixing screws, countersunk

Sizing

Adjustable 60mm or 70mm backset — the distance from the edge of the door to the centre of the spindle. The body is stamped with both, and with the imperial equivalents, 2⅜ inch and 2¾ inch. Extend or retract it by hand before fitting; no tools needed.

That covers the two positions almost every internal door in the UK is drilled for. If you are replacing an existing latch, measure from the door edge to the centre of the round knob hole — that measurement is the backset.

Takes a standard 8mm square spindle, so it suits our turning glass and ceramic knobs and most other internal knob sets.

Latch or lock

It works either way. Used as a latch, the sprung bolt holds the door closed and releases when the knob turns. Cover the latch pin with the strike plate and it holds as a lock instead — useful on a bathroom or a bedroom door.

Buying more than one

Most houses need several at once. A pack of five is the usual number for a floor of bedrooms plus a bathroom, and works out cheaper per latch than buying singles.

Works well in: period panelled doors behind ceramic or glass knobs, cottage and farmhouse bedrooms and bathrooms, and boot rooms or hallways where you want a smooth, quiet action on a well-used door.
