Each hinge is worked by hand at the forge, the long strap tapering to the coin-round penny end that gives this style its name. The finish is a soft, mellow pewter — a cool gray-silver with the gently-aged depth of a piece that has sat quietly on a door for years. It has none of the hardness of bright metal; instead it settles into timber with an easy, lived-in grace.

Surface-mounted and made to be seen, these hinges lead the eye along the grain and lend even a new door the character of something long-standing. There is no mortising to cut — they fix straight to the face of the timber, load-bearing and handsome from the first turn.
