Cabinet Knob Size Calculator — Find the Right Hardware Size

Sizing is where most people get cabinet hardware wrong — a beautiful knob half an inch too small on a wide drawer front, a bar pull that dwarfs a small upper. The cabinet stays the same; the hardware makes the room look either considered or accidental.

The rule the workshop uses is roughly one-quarter of the door width, adjusted for cabinet type and finish. A 12-inch upper wants a small knob; a 30-inch drawer wants a long bar pull. The margin between right and wrong is narrower than most homeowners guess, which is why we built this tool. Enter your cabinet door or drawer width in inches, and the calculator returns the size we would specify — with a recommended piece from the Birmingham range.

If you have a mixed run of cabinet sizes, run the calculator once per door width. Consistency of proportion matters more than consistency of hardware size — a kitchen with three knob sizes chosen well always reads better than a kitchen with one size forced across every door.

A note on measurement

Measure the door or drawer front, edge to edge — not the interior cabinet box. If your doors are inset (flush with the frame) the door width is what you measure. If they are overlay (sitting proud of the frame) the door width is still what you measure, not the cabinet opening. The calculator is agnostic to overlay style.
