This hand forged coinbase Suffolk thumb latch is made using traditional blacksmith techniques and finished in a classic traditional black coating. Forged from solid iron and assembled by hand, the latch is designed to provide a strong, reliable fastening while retaining the character and proportions associated with historic ironwork. The latch is fitted with round coinbase fixing plates, created by hammering the iron to form a raised edge around each fixing point. This detailing reinforces the structure of the latch and reflects the distinctive appearance of traditional forged iron fittings commonly found on period doors, cottages, barns and heritage interiors. Once forged, the latch is finished in a traditional black coating. This finish offers durable surface protection and is suitable for both internal and external use. The black finish provides a clean, understated look that complements natural timber doors and works comfortably across restoration projects, rustic properties and traditional architectural settings. The Suffolk thumb latch operates via a thumb press on one side of the door, engaging a latch bar on the opposite side to hold the door closed. It is suitable for internal room doors, pantry doors and cupboard doors, as well as external applications such as entry doors, outbuildings and barn doors where a traditional latch mechanism is required. The latch is supplied complete with matching fixing screws and all necessary components for installation, including the latch bar and keep, ensuring a consistent finish once fitted.

About the Traditional Black Finish

Traditional Black is a powder-coated finish that provides an attractive appearance along with long-lasting durability. Applied, this type of coating offers excellent corrosion resistance and can remain intact for 10–15 years under normal conditions. Powder coating offers several advantages over conventional liquid paints. It contains no solvents, making it more environmentally considerate, and it does not run or drip during application. The result is a tougher, more uniform coating. The process involves spraying a dry powdered paint onto bare metal. As the powder leaves the spray gun, it becomes electrostatically charged and adheres to the metal surface. The coated metal is then placed in an oven at around 400°F (approx. 200°C) for about 10 minutes, where the powder melts and cures into a smooth, even protective layer. Items finished in Traditional Black require only light maintenance. Occasional cleaning and polishing, along with a small amount of oil on moving parts, helps ensure continued smooth operation. If any chips or scratches expose bare metal in time, they should be touched up with an appropriate exterior paint to help maintain water resistance.
